Pharmacotherapy
The new drugs for obesity come under the names Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro. They work by mimicking the actions of hormones that are normally secreted by the intestine around 30 mins after eating. These hormones act to turn off your appetite and turn on satiety (fullness). The drugs therefore lead to a significant reduction in your appetite even as you are losing weight.
They are injection treatments that need to be administered once per week. It is important that the treatment is supervised by a medical professional. If the dose is too high then side effects can occur such as unpleasant nausea (like a sea sickness) or severe acid reflux.
Research has shown that if someone can tolerate this type of treatment it can produce up to 15% weight loss. The downsides to treatment are the cost, the fact that when stopped weight regain tends to happen and a theoretical risk (from animal experiments) of thyroid cancer and pancreatitis.
